Hint / Pests / Raccoons

Anti-raccoon duct “skirts” for fruit & nut trees!

Cherry tree with two “metal duct skirts” to create one duct large enough for its big trunk.

One of our garden club members figured out how to keep raccoons out of her plum, cherry, and apple trees!

She wrapped them in metal ducts 2” bigger than the tree trunks. Put the bottom of the duct about 1’foot above the ground, drill or punch a hole in the top and another at the bottom; use a cotter pin (or a nut/bolt) to tighten top and bottom one.

If your tree is of large diameter, you may have to put two ducts together, like the cherry tree at left.   The plum tree’s trunk, below, was very skinny and two shorter ducts were attached to each other “top” to “bottom”.  Overlap the TOP-most duct over the bottom.

The raccoons can’t climb them!

Do not screw or nail the ducts into the tree trunks.  At the end of the season, just take the “ducts” off until next spring.

Close up with nut/bolts – there are actually two ducts connected to each other around the this cherry tree.

Plum tree with one duct above the other; the top duct overlaps the bottom one. (The fencing at right did not deter raccoons.)

  1. I would be concerned that the heat on this metal could “cook” the wood underneath. I am still looking for a method to keep the earwigs out of my apples.

    • If the tree provides shade for its own trunk, this shouldn’t be a problem. If anything, it will likely reflect the heat and light away from the tree. Just make sure NOT to leave it on the tree after the fruit is picked.
