The Community Garden Club of Camas Washougal is located in eastern Clark County, Southwest Washington State, USA.

Our Mission

The Garden Club’s objectives are:
  1. To stimulate knowledge and love of gardening among its members and the community.
  2. To promote responsible stewardship of the environment.
  3. To promote fun and friendship among members.
  4. To operate as a non-profit organization under section 501(c)(4) of the IRS Revenue Code.

Overview

Established in 1941, the Community Garden Club of Camas and Washougal, Washington state, has devoted its activities to the joys of gardening in our maritime climate where vegetation flourishes year-round.

Description

The Garden Club is dedicated to newcomers and veterans who can come together to learn, teach and share their love of gardening. Our members will enthusiastically share their successes (and failures!) with you.

Meeting Dates and Times

Garden club meetings are held the 4th Wednesday of the month, August through May (excepting December) at 1pm in the Camas Community Center, 1718 SE 7th Avenue, Camas, WA 98607.   We do NOT have general monthly meetings during June, July or December.  November’s meeting is the 3rd Wednesday.

General Information

Membership is open to all!  (Application form at bottom of page.)

Our meetings include presentations such as: Flower Arranging, Composting, Container Gardening,  Drip Irrigation, Garden Art, Garden Tools, Landscaping, Lawn Control, Native Plants, Organic & Non-Organic Gardening, Perennial and/or Raised Beds, Pest & Disease Identification & Control, Pruning, Propagation and more!

Speaker presentations are free and open to the public – you do not need to be a member to attend presentations.

The club has a long history of philanthropy including donations of goods and time to local charities, Camas and Washougal K-12th grade school grants, libraries and community gardens.

We also have many beautification projects:   8,000 daffodils planted along the Columbia River, tending/planting roses in Parker’s Landing and tending/pruning rhododendrons at Camas Post Office, and many more!

One of the “perks” to being a member is our field trips to private and public gardens and nurseries!  (As the budget permits, some of these trips and entrance fees are paid by the club.)

Our main fund raiser is our Annual Plant Sale each spring when our members grow, pot up and donate plants from their gardens to the club.  These plants are sold locally to the public at modest prices in a ONE day sale (location varies).

1.  Can anyone join the club?      Yes!   (Application form at bottom of this page.)

2.  How much are the annual dues?     $12/year.  If you’re 80 years old or greater, let our president or treasurer know so you can take advantage of “free” membership.

3.  May I still attend the club’s general meetings, even if I’m not a member ?     Yes, all speaker’s presentations, are open to the public free of charge.  We have some amazing speakers every year!

4.  What are the benefits of joining the club (and paying dues)?  You can (a) make motions, suggestions and vote on the club’s activities and where we spend our money,  (b)  attend fields trips and travel to public and private gardens and commercial plant & garden events (some of the trip expenses are paid by the club), (c)  participate in “beautification” activities such as our mass plantings of thousands of daffodils along the Columbia Riverfront, tend roses at Parker’s Landing and rhododendrons at Camas Post Office, (d) help plant, grow, pot and set up our annual Plant Sale, (e) manage our Grants to worthy causes in the Camas/Washougal area and (f) have access to our private Facebook group to share and ask questions and share news with other garden club members. Don’t know how to do some of these things?  We’ll teach you!

5.  When are annual dues, DUE?    The first general meeting of the fiscal year, in August.  Or when you join for the first time.

6.  How do I join?   You officially join the club when we receive your $12 payment and  a completed application form (at bottom of this page).  You may pay at one of our meetings or during our annual Plant Sale, OR, you may mail a check and the completed form to us at this address:  CGCofCW,   PO Box 746, Washougal, WA  98671.

7.  Can I join in summer when there are no regular club meetings (June-July) or if I missed the monthly general meetings?   We don’t monitor our email, post office box or messages as frequently in the summer, so delays in responses do happen; contact us and we’ll try to sort it out.

9.  How about a little more on the history of the club?   The Garden Club was started in 1941 and was originally a men’s garden club. As the men left to go to war their wives started to take over the responsibilities of the club. In 1949 it was reorganized and federated. Years ago one had to be sponsored to become a member and there was quite a waiting list. Looking back in our scrapbooks the women were all called by their husband’s name as in Mrs. William Smith, etc. In 2011 the club voted to withdraw from the State and  National Federation of Garden Clubs and we are now considered a private non-profit organization with over 90 members.
